shame on the italian government

(Here we are … once again)

The Italian Government fired Carlo Rubbia, president of the ENEA (Italian Institute for Alternative Energies) and Nobel prize for physics. The origin of the fight was an open letter that the president published on one of the main Italian journals: Repubblica. In this letter, the scientist, made public the impasse the he was living with the executive council. In fact, a number of politicians nominated by the government was acting completely against the ideas and projects that the president was stimulating and promoting. The result was a lost of significant amount of founding from the european commission, and the drift of control of Italy’s primate projects such as Antarctica among others.

If you happen to read Italian, here is the full story.

CONTEXT-05 Day 4

Lots of nice talk on the forth day of the conference. I particularly appreciated the talk by Larry Bersalou  on Situated Simulation in the Human Conceptual system. Another interesting work by Frederic Landragin on Modelling Contextfor Referring in multimodal systems. Here are my running notes.

The Self-Organising Map

The SOM is an algorithm used to visualize and interpret large high-dimensional data sets. Typical applications are visualization of process states or financial results by representing the central dependencies within the data on the map.

The map consists of a regular grid of processing units, “neurons”. A model of some multidimensional observation, eventually a vector consisting of features, is associated with each unit. The map attempts to represent all the available observations with optimal accuracy using a restricted set of models. At the same time the models become ordered on the grid so that similar models are close to each other and dissimilar models far from each other. [url]

CONTEXT-05 Talk by Dan Sperber

First day of the conference. Lots of interesting ideas, especially the talk by Dan Sperber on massive modular systems. The running notes are available here. Some extra links:

One interesting paper by Adrian Flanagan about a learning algorithm for inferring meaningful places. Another project done in the group of U. Hoppe on the ontology facilitated community navigation [url]. The last one an italian project combining the classical architecture of multi agent system with a power consumption model [url].
